Up until recently, most of Indiana’s counties didn’t make the switch to daylight savings time every year. Two years ago, that changed. The shift allowed a study to be done: does going to daylight savings time save or waste energy? The result: energy is wasted. Indiana households spent $8.6 million per year after making the switch. Who benefits? Fossil fuel corporations, power corporations, and malls. Yes, malls. Additional studies show that Americans shop more once daylight savings time goes into effect and that shopping is curtailed once we move back off of it. We’re not saving daylight. We’re wasting energy and money. [h/t Climate Progress].
