Health Insurance Cos. Secretly Gave Millions To Defeat Health Care Reform Effort

What will the pro-incrementalists say?  $86.2 million were given to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by the largest health insurance corporations, which the Chamber used to undermine health care reform legislative efforts in 2009 and 2010.

As eventually became clear, but not until too late, health care reform became a Health Insurance Giveaway orchestrated by Democrats and opposed by Republican Teabaggers who were only hell-bent on destroying the Obama Presidency.  They Republican Teabaggers could give a fig leaf less whether the legislation passed or  not, or what form it took.  They’re only interest is in putting a Teabagger back in the White House and continuing this country’s march back to the 1750s.

On the Democratic side, I read and talked to folks for months who advocated taking a small chunk, any small chuck that could be salvaged from the gutter and declaring the first step toward health care reform taken.  Incrementalists were happy to point out that health insurance corporations were supposedly in negotiations with President Obama and Congressional Democrats in an effort to help pass health care reform. This news publicizes the lie behind that duplicitous sham.  I’m sure the incrementalists will say now that those millions of dollars didn’t make much of a difference, that reform was successfully attained.  I think it demonstrates how patently absurd it was for any Democrat to believe that the health insurance companies were negotiating with Obama and Democrats in good faith.  They got exactly what they wanted at the end of the day.  Can the same be said for most Americans?

I suppose the rest of us should thank the incrementalists for helping ensure 34 million Americans will be forced to purchase insurance from private insurers but remain without any public option that would help drive costs down.  Or, we can stop listening to the incrementalists and stand up more forcefully for what we want – on health care and other issues.

Health Insurance & Wall St Firms Part Of Koch-Sponsored June Get Together

That little get together was limited to 210 people.  The purpose was to plot how to put the White House back under their control after the 2012 election.

To all the folks who tried desperately to assure us that incrementalism would work the best for health insurance and Wall St legislation; that since they ran ads supporting tiny pieces of legislation, President Obama won a great battle, what do you have to say about this?  The folks invited from those industries weren’t there advocating for average Americans’ well being.  They weren’t trying to figure out how to deliver better health care to more people.  They weren’t trying to figure out how to limit the kinds of financial instruments they could package, sell, then bet short on.  They were there trying to figure out how to make more and more and more profit – enriching themselves and to hell with the rest of us.

Firms who want to limit “climate change alarmism” were also there.  Would the incrementalists like to refresh our memories regarding how well their grand strategy worked with respect to a climate and energy bill?  Oh yes, I forgot, we don’t even have one of those, and we’re not going to get one any year soon.  In the meantime, the Earth continues to warm, corals continue to be bleached, extreme weather events get more common.  Our species existence will be on the line within a matter of decades.  It won’t matter then what kind of health insurance plan people can buy or what the financial giants can and can’t do.

The other side is playing for keeps.  The sooner rank-and-file Democrats figure that out, the sooner we’ll see the action we so desperately need from them.

Cowardly Democrats & Climate

If you follow this policy topic, by no doubt you’ve already heard or read somewhere that elected Democrats have decided not to even try to put together a climate and energy bill in 2010.  I don’t know when they think they’ll take it up.  I don’t think they know when they’ll take it up.  What I do know right now is outside of Nancy Pelosi, a number of Democratic “leaders” have done anything but lead and should be voted out of office (or positions of responsibility) as soon as possible.  Sen. Reid. Sen. Schumer and Sen. Durbin are on that list.  President Obama very well could be.
